We have two methods of testing hormones. One way is to test blood levels, and another way is to test salivary hormones.
Salivary hormones are thought to correlate more closely to tissue levels of hormones than blood levels would. Through salivary hormones we can test for levels of estradiol, progesterone, DHEA, testosterone, and cortisol. This test is helpful also because not only will it show if you are high or low in a certain hormone, it will also show any “functional imbalances”. For example, your hormones could all be in normal ranges, however your estrogen could be high normal while your progesterone is low normal: this would put you in a functional “high estrogen” state….and this is something we would want to treat.
Hormone testing would be beneficial for women who have irregular menstruation, or through perimenopause or menopause or also for women who are experiencing conditions such as endometriosis or ovarian cysts or hormonal acne. It would also be beneficial for men who are experiencing andropause, or declining levels of testosterone, such as low libido, loss of muscle mass, and fatigue.
We would likely do a month long sample to see how your hormones were fluctuating throughout the month, and then treat accordingly with vitamins and supplements and herbs, and of course referring you out to your medical doctor if needed. Collection of saliva is painless and convenient. The patient would take the tubes home to collect the saliva into a tube and these tubes would then be sent off to the lab for testing.
