Sciatica Calgary

Treating Sciatica with Naturopathic Medicine

Sciatica can be a very painful and debilitating condition, and it is something I treat often in my NW Calgary Naturopathic Medicine practice. This condition is often characterized by a one-sided leg pain that starts in the low back and moves down through the buttocks into the leg. The pain can go all the way down to the calf. It can feel like tingling, burning, and numbness, and can also be accompanied by weakness in the involved leg. It is typically caused by some sort of impingement of the Sciatic Nerve, such as a herniated lumbar disc, bone spur or degenerative disc disease.

Naturopathic Medicine has several treatment options to offer for patients suffering from Sciatica. Keep reading to learn more!

Acupuncture for Sciatica

Acupuncture works quite well for Sciatica. Acupuncture needles are inserted into the low back, the gluts and along the distribution of pain down the leg. I also typically use relaxation points as well as points for sleep and energy boosting as well. Treatment frequency is based on the intensity of pain the patient is experiencing, but can be as often as twice a week till symptoms subside. Patients can notice a significant improvement right after the first treatment, but some patients will require several treatments. You can read more about Acupuncture here.

Cupping for Sciatica

Often cupping is used in adjunct with acupuncture in the treatment of Sciatica. Cupping is very useful for relaxing tight muscles in the low back, glutes, and down the leg. It is also good for bringing blood flow to the area to heal inflammation, and bring in nutrients to the area to heal it. You can read more about Cupping here.

Bowen Therapy for Sciatica

Bowen therapy works quite well for Sciatica as well. This treatment involves gentle touch over muscles of the low back, glutes and legs, and helps release tight muscles. It is a very relaxing treatment, and often several sessions are required. You can read more about Bowen Therapy here.

Vitamins and Supplements for Sciatica

Based on the patients health history and medications that they are on, supplements can be prescribed to reduce inflammation levels, help with pain levels, as well support moods and energy levels that may be affected by dealing with chronic pain. You can read more about Vitamins and Supplements here.

Mesotherapy for Sciatica

This treatment involves injecting homeopathics under the skin in the affected areas, such as the low back, glutes and the affected leg. The homeopathics are anti-inflammatory as well as specific for nerve pain, and can reduce pain levels almost immediately. Treatments are generally scheduled twice a week until pain subsides. You can read more about Mesotherapy here.

As you can see there are many treatment options available for a patient suffering from the pain of Sciatica. If you have any questions about which treatment option might be best for you, please do not hesitate to contact me at my NW Calgary Naturopathic Medicine practice.
